Under the Apple Tree / Mrs Newton
The design is based on parts of works taken from Henri Matisse’s “cutouts”. I have changed the colours to a green and a berber and rearranged the elements to create the narrative. Matisse was one of the two great 20th century artists in France (along with Picasso, though he seems less well known now) and an absolute master of colour. He produced his cutouts at the end of his career by cutting big sheets of painted up paper, freehand, from the wheel chair he was then confined to. He described it as a cross between sculpture and painting. Three end block weave with shaft switching. Cotton warp, carpet wool weft. Finish Damascus edge.
