Two sided design in grey with freehand orange insets and space dyed based on red-orange
I had fortuitously been given a cone of space dyed carpet wool in red-orange over-dyed progressively with a dark brown. I checked and found that the space dying repeated approximately every two yards which was roughly twice the width of the current warp. This activated one of my “background” ideas; that such a close repeat would give subtle and interesting colour interactions when woven up. I had originally been thinking of moire patterns in optics though. The black warp tempers the space dyed weft adding a fine squares motif. The grey side was based on another of my old ideas namely strong orange shapes on a grey background. The shapes, which are nearly all parallelograms, were put in by hand. Black weaving warp, grey, orange and a space dyed red-orange wefts. The two warp rug weave based on tabby with hand manipulation. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet wool weft and weaving warp. Finish philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in.
