Seated Figure 1 in the style of Matisse
Matisse is an artist I return to again and again for inspiration, both for his use of colour and the forms in his cutouts. For this design, inspired by his nu blu series, I drew and redrew an original figure multiple times till I managed to get proportions that seemed vaguely human. Abstracting from the drawings to a “cutout” form took many tries but did take out the unevenness of my truly amateur drawing skills. The colour choice of heavily unevenly dyed grey gives an effect I like but Matisse did not use, whereas I think he would have approved of the lime green which is undimmed by the pale grey weaving warp.
The two warp rug weave based on turned broken 2-2 twill with shaft switching. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet wool weaving warp and wefts. Finish modified philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in. 900 x 1250 mm. Sold.
