River Rapids/Curves combined 12c

Developed for the Professional Weavers Network “Rivers, Metaphor of a Journey” exhibition.
An essentially geometric design, one of what is becoming a series, based on playing with sine waves. The design represents the foaming waves generated in a rapids, hence the thin plied in yarns to give the effect of the aerated waters. Offsetting the sine waves and changing the period represents the physics where the waves are generated by the water flowing over and around obstructions. The “shape” of each wave comes from the properties of water, gravity and crucially the flow velocity, which varies across and along the river.Every wave interacts with the others to give a complex combined result. Each wave varies the flow velocity around the obstructions downstream causing variations in the waves generated by them etc. The result is chaotic (mathematically) but gives shapes that are characteristic. So much of natures beauty is incredibly complex but has some simple underlying principals.

The two warp rug weave based on turned broken 2-2 twill with shaft switching. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet wool weaving warp and carpet wool plied with thin unknown wool wefts. Finish modified philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in. 890 x 1110 mm. $990.
