Pingao rug
This rug was a commission in a specific set of colours based on pingao growing a dark volcanic sand sand dune. Pīngao, the golden sand sedge, was once common on sand dunes throughout New Zealand. It is a stout, grass-like plant, 30–90 cm tall, from the sedge family, found on active sand dunes. It is found only in New Zealand and is a native sand-binding sedge that plays an important role in New Zealand's dune ecosystems. It has stiff, curled leaves that can be a brilliant green - especially when young - golden yellow or, on more mature plants, a fiery orange, hence the colour set. The reverse is another take on the space-dyed idea in suitable colours. I spent a lot of time dying wool to the correct colours to match the paint chip suppled.
