Music Rug Kashmir Raanu

Raanu is a traditional weave from Finland used to make the panels of the Laplanders tents where it would have loops of the warp and the weft left poking out at intervals to allow the panels to be tied together. For this design I devised a system for representing musical notes by colours from pinky magenta (low notes) to violet (high ones) and used the lengths of the colour columns to represent the duration of the notes. Single black picks represent the gap between individual notes and black columns are rests. The background colour is a dark red almost completely but unevenly over-dyed with black. This was chosen to represent the noise on a recording tape (that hiss you get when you turn the volume up). The music chosen is Kashmir by Led Zepplin, shades of my youth. The rug is reversible with either the colours or the background being more dominant. Cotton warp, wool weft.
