Marine Form 1 after Matisse
Matisse used shapes like this as a motif in a number of his cutouts works inspired by his time in Polynesia. Marine form as they evoke corals and seaweeds. Here I have taken the motif as the whole design with a weave structure that sawtooths on a shallow diagonal up the rug. I feel the resulting surface texture gives a wave like quality. That sawtooth texture rather than the contrast weaving warp with the weft colours is the essence of the design for me.
The two warp rug weave based on long and short pointed 2-2 twill with shaft switching. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet wool weaving warp and wefts. Finish modified philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in. 890 x 1170 mm. $940.
