Fish
(Koi Carp) Design
For me this was a collision of three good ideas. I had been playing with motifs to represent scales and this one works so well on a fish this size. The fish itself has a nice sinuous flowing shape suggesting forward movement emphasised by me stretching it out longer than my initial ideas. The colours, obviously orange for the koi carp and blue for the water, but gradated from left “in the light” to right “darkness” making the fish swim into the light. I used a whole range of wools to get the effects, carpet wools some dyed by me and other wools including plied together singles with a single strand of lighter wool to create the slight sparkle effects. The rug is functionally and decoratively two sided although I designed it to show the orange fish on a blue background. The weave is 3 end block weave with shaft switching. Finished with Damascus edge. Cotton warp, wool weft.
