Fallen Leaves exhibition piece for PWN Ngahere
This design is an exercise in warp painting superimposed on a block pattern of greens and browns. Two warp rug weave based on tabby with 2 blocks. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet wool weft and weaving warp, warp painting detail. Finish philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in.
This rug was primarily inspired by the initial Ngahere discussions that envisaged a walk through experience. It is intended to be on the floor and to symbolise a path through the bush.
The detail inspiration was seeing large fallen leaves on a path whilst walking on a bush trail. They were surprisingly distinct against the greens and browns of the path and surroundings. I chose leaf shapes that are distinctive in shape: karaka, kawakawa and five finger. All species that are endemic and which I associate with the New Zealand bush. The background matrix is a selection of the range of greens and browns you encounter on a tramp in a fairly random harmonious block pattern. The detail leaves are all in colours that I picked out from my design work on "Supplejack". These are the actual colours I used in dying the background for Supplejack, even the purple. They were hand painted onto the weaving warp whilst on the loom at double length so they look right after the weaving. The weaving warp has a "take up" of roughly double the stuffer warp.
