Elvet Bridge 1a

Elvet Bridge is a medieval masonry arch bridge across the River Wear (pronounced weir as in werewolf) in the city of Durham, County Durham in the north of England. It is a Grade I listed building and dates from 1160. I worked at Durham University for 14 years and would walk across it a few times a week. The combination of antiquity with continuing use symbolises the city for me. The textured greens on the right bank are the result of plying a light with a then dark green.
The two warp rug weave based on tabby with shaft switching and hand manipulation. Cotton stuffer warp, carpet and other wool weft and carpet wool weaving warp. Finish philippine edge with weaving warps darned back in. 890 x 1220 mm. $990.
