Angles of Perception Triangular Motifs Rug 2
This is the other of a pair of designs produced for the Professional Weavers Network Angles of Perception exhibition. The theme was to use strong colours and black (hence the dyed warp ends) to raise questions about the nature of weaving. For myself, I researched optical illusions based on a triangular theme. Weaving does not naturally produce triangular motifs as the threads cross at right angles and hence produce rectilinear shapes. each triangular panel is delineated from the next by a diagonal line of kilim slits through which a rod can be threaded. Then the whole can be folded into a triangular pyramid as one of the two rugs was exhibited. The only repeated motif is a Penrose triangle originally thought of by Roger Penrose, a colleague of and the man who taught Steven Hawking topology. Three end block weave with shaft switching and kilim technique. Cotton warp, carpet wool weft. Finish Damascus edge.
